The vLoc3-5000 utility locator brings an innovative element of digital signal processing, position capturing and broadband frequency selection to buried utility locating. Data captured by the internal GPS or external GPS via Bluetooth can be downloaded for further analysis, use with GIS systems or google maps. With two sets of screened 3D antennas signal distortion is easily detected and displayed on the bright full-colour display. Along with classic locate screens the vLoc3-5000 locator offers new locate perspective screens of Vector Locate for fully automatic non-walk over locating, Transverse Graph showing both peak and null simultaneously providing an immediate measurement of signal distortion, Plan View showing the relative orientation of the cable at any angle, and a new graphical Sonde screen with guidance arrows leading to the sonde location even when it is vertical.
When a transmitter is connected to a target line, the signal travels along it and finds the easiest way to travel back, usually via the ground and ground stake. However, very often the signal will travel back along with adjacent utilities which offer an easier route. As a result, there can be multiple signals radiating from utilities in the area making it difficult to identify the target line. These return signals are typically travelling in the opposite direction than the applied signal. The Signal Direction feature identifies which direction the signal is flowing and hence the target line.
Recent Service Location & GPR Projects we have assisted in include:
- The Bulman Drainage Project it involved service locating, used to locate water, sewer, Telstra and electrical lines throughout the community.
- Bauxite Reserve Thickness the GPR was used to determine the thickness of any bauxite leftover from historical mining and rehabilitation projects.
- Gove Town Assets and Utilities database consolidation.
The Difference of Surveyors
Service locating is an important job. These assets cost considerable amounts of money to install and similar amounts to repair if broken. There is also the consideration of safety, as buried power cables will always pose a significant risk in any excavation.
While you can quickly google a service provider to locate these utilities for you, there is real benefit in approaching a survey consultancy like us to undertake the locating. Firstly we have all the equipment on hand to map the asset and produce plans for use well into the future. Secondly if you plan to install new assets as part of the excavation, our surveyors can survey in the asset as its laid and provide as built drawings, why bring two teams on site, when you can work with just one?
Paint marks disappear while quality survey records do not. Invest in having your services located and then mapped for both the cost savings and piece of mind into the future.
